Happy babbling 9 month old crawles over to me.
I pick him up and give him all kinds of kisses and stupid noises to make him laugh.
I put my finger into the honey and I said "Here Peanut, taste THIS! Tell me that isn't the good stuff!"
Thomas is immediately hooked, wants more and more, he's trying to slip his own little hand into it.
"Whoa buddy, we don't want a huge mess, where's your manner's anyway?" I say
*ring* *ring*
"Hello?" I say
"Hey" She says
"What are you up to?" I ask
"Nothing, just hanging out with the kids, what are you doing?" she says
giggling "Oh nothing, just giving Thomas some of my honey, he totally loves it"
"You are giving Thomas Honey? Like honey from a bee? Like peanut butter and honey?" she says
"Yeah *giggling* he so loves it, it's like crack, he wants more" I say
"I don't mean to alarm you, but YOU CAN'T GIVE HONEY TO A BABY!!!" she says in a panic
"What? Why not?" I ask
"Because, it's bad for them, they aren't supposed to have it before a year old, it says so right on the bottle!!" she says
"WHAT? It does? Where?" I say as I immediately put the plate in the sink, and run for the honey bottle. Yep there is it "may be harmful to children under 12 months of age"
"OH GREAT! Now what do I do? I'm totally freaking out" I said as I imediately grab my computer and turn it on, all while I am carrying Thomas and looking for signs that he's puffing up or not breathing, he seems to be all smiles.
"I'll call you back" I said as I hung up the phone.
I am typing as fast as I can, *click* and I read this....
Infants younger than 12 months are at risk of infant botulism from eating honey. Infant botulism is a rare but serious form of food poisoning
ACK!!! WHAT?? Food poisoning....OMG! I immediately beging to cry, I grab Thomas, I bury my head in his neck and I cry, I tell him I don't deserve him, that I am a horrible mommy, I just gave him honey. How could I NOT know that??
You know you are a rookie mom when you feed your baby, under a year old, honey!
*no babies were harmed in this episode of honey consumption

Too funny! I love reading all the rookie mom moments! I love that you can put botulism as one of the labels on your post. When will you ever be able to do that again?
I knew about peanut stuff..didn't know about the honey. Will file that away for when I'm a mommy..
You know, I think there are a LOT of moms who dont know about the honey thing. So dont feel bad.
Thankfully I am not a honey eater, because I knew nothing about the honey when I had my first child either.
I didn't know that....lucky, I did not feed my children honey when they were younger. It's kinda funny now when you read through the post but I'm sure you were really really worried at the time.
I did know about those, I think I was so nervous with my first that I read every single book on babies there was out there and I was sooo fanatical about food.
Now I'm more chilled, but yeah, honey really is dangerous under a year. And raw pb is a choking habit for anyone, btw.
Yikes! I'm glad nothing bad came of that. Actually, when you started I thought for sure it would end up Thomas had a horrible peanut allergy :)
Visiting from Mama Kat's
At least no harm came from it and that you had someone to tell you about the dangers.
But he survived. And they need to make that print a little bigger.
And the peanut butter should also say, "Best to wait until after age 2" due to possible allergy. Alas, we learned the hard way with anaphylaxis but we survived. Whew.
I never ever gave my babies honey!
My mom did while she was baby sitting once though. And I gave the first born eggs before I was supposed to and had a similar freak out reaction wafter both occasions. I'm just happy mine didn't have any allergies.
Fortunately the key word is 'rare'. And food poisoning? I've had it....just cleans out the colon.
Awww. Everyone makes mistakes. I would have freaked out too and then I would have calmed down and had a funny story to tell after. He will love telling the story about how you almost gave him "food poisoning" as an infant when he is a teenager.
I would've freaked out too. I'm not sure where I read that you can't give honey to a baby- but it was in some article I randomly came across. I'm a nurse and I didn't know that.
who would've thought?
Hey I didn't know this until I read it here. It ain't easy being a mommy.
Yikes! If it makes you feel better I gave my oldest seafood before she was 2. :)
