You just haven't had it cooked properly

Why is it that I can remember every single meal that was prepared that I absolutely loathed? Aren't the bad things supposed to fade from memories? Aren't we supposed to suppress those horrible awful memories?
I can remember so vividly....tuna casserole *GAG* (Anything tuna will make me seriously do a yucky dance and maybe even barf....YES EVEN FRESH TUNA) and don't anyone ever say "You just haven't had it cooked right". No matter how you slice it, dice it, mix it, mash it, grill it or steam it....Tuna. is. nasty! I can remember some sort of like chow mien type junk my mom would make...Ick, I still can see it and still don't like it. Beef stroganoff, fish sticks, just to mention a few.
Ohhh this one will get ya....my dad liked Liver...(now my mom will tell you this is not true and that my brother and I made up this name for liver, but I am telling you....SHE made it up) My mom made liver, my brother and I couldn't read, so she told us it was "Chicken fish" ummm okay...why not, they have dog fish and cat fish and fish fish, why not chicken fish...and we believed her...this ugly black slab of meat on a plate...slimy and so not a delicacy. And once we were able to read....we figured out why we didn't like it....my brother went to the trash pulled out the packaging and read La-ver-e...Li-ver-e.....LIVER!! EWWWWWWWWW It's LIVER....don't eat it!
And isn't it funny how along with all those horrible memories you think of all the yummy's that you remember. And I had a different fav for different times of my life. I still love a good hot dog...okay so not so home made...but it works!!! I will forever remember Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup. Ohhhh YUM! Okay again not home made....but when I am sick, that is the ONLY kind of soup to make!
And I can remember my mom making pork chops and mashed potatoes and kohlrabi's in a cream sauce!! TO. DIE. FOR! That is like a party in your mouth. Now I don't eat pork...or red meat for that matter....but aside from mashed potatoes, which are a comfort food in and of itself, my absolute most favorite thing that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside is kohlrabi's in cream sauce. Because if mom makes them, I know they are just for me! And that is what makes them best!

My grandfather used to tell us liver was steak. We were not fooled, yet we had to eat it. Yuck.

I've never had kohlrabi in cream sauce...sounds intriguing!

Great post Erin! I think it is funny how great our memories are when it comes to foods that we liked/disliked while growing up. The kohlrabi in cream sauce sounds amazing! I might have to go check out the prompts this week, this was a fun one!

Hope you are well, I'm getting around to catch up now, I have been having too much fun getting to know my precious gift to do much blogging or visiting!

Hugs,
Trudy

mmm, tuna. I love tuna. But I feel for you about the yucky stuff. I hate liver too and my grandmother use to make us eat that stuff because it's "good for us." Plus she always pulled the "I spent all day making it for you and you're going to waste it" guilt trip on us. Tricky, tricky grandma.

Being Asian has brought about a large amount of gross food though. You've got your pigs blood cube, chicken feet, etc (because it's gross enough mentioning those)

The mashed potatoes and kohirabi in cream sauce sound's yummy though. :)

LOL, one of my college friends had a baby brother who was a finicky eater. His mom called pork chops "chicken chops" to get him to eat them. It's not nearly as funny as chicken fish though!

Clicking thru from Mama Kat's...

Kohlrabis are my brothers favorite food! My grandma always makes them for him - I wrote about the same prompt (and I also HATE Tuna) - stopping by from Mama Kats!

I have never heard of kohlrabis. Liver? ICK! My Daddy loves it... I could never get the love for that particular meal. I think that things our mom always take good because they use love when they are cooking. : ) Except for liver. No amount of love can make liver delicious!

Tuna is "of the devil". Seriously - it's disgusting.

My mom makes these amazing hamburgers...I hate red meat...especially ground beef...but her hamburgers are amazing. Instead of a bun, she always put them on toasted wheat bread with just a hint of ketchup & mustard..sweet pickles and american cheese. I need one of those right now!

My cousin once made the most horrendous concoction: tuna cake. I thought I'd died and gone to hell.

I'm off to vote for you! Congrats!

My mom was a pretty amazing cook and she never really tried to pull anything over on my brother and I. She was sort of a Paula Dean style cook. Everything was either fried or slathered in butter and potatoes were a staple....and cheese. It's a wonder I grew up extremely skinny. (I didn't break the 100 pound mark until I got pregnant with my first)

Goolosh. Whoever came up with that name didn't know how to make it sound even a little bit appetizing. Goo and losh. Ugh! That was the one meal I remember my mom making me sit at the table to finish. In the end, I won that one. It was just too dang disgusting. Yuck!

I love tuna! It's so good for you! But I won't tell you that you haven't had it cooked right. lol

My mother ruined pork chops for me for life. You don't forget the bad meals so you can protect yourself from future trauma!
